Initial Planning re-submission

Initial planning ideasI had to start thinking about ideas which I could share with my fellow group members, when doing so we firstly thought of the narrative, the target audience and the inspiration for our film. Our group got together during today and yesterday's lesson to sit and think of all our personal ideas and to try and get mostly all of them down on a piece of paper, using a mind map. This was worthwhile because each member got to input their own personal ideas which interlinked with group discussions as well as ideas.

These ideas helped the group narrow down specific ideas that would be used in the final production. With this in mind it also meant that each member of the team would be able to have a significant input into the final ideas. The planning ideas were good as they were only initial and did not have to be final or mean very much to the final idea. However being initial ideas it was good for the group to think seriously about them as it could affect the following work such as final ideas, story boards and target audience profile.

Although working in a group can sometimes be hard when putting your own views across, but we found that giving each other turn when speaking and inputting ideas we worked better as group. I put forward a name for the group because I thought coming up with a group name would get the group more excited about the final production. I came up with the name 'Kingsford productions' this was interlinking all of the members previous school's together.

This name also connoted how the locations fitted in with our piece and what it means, for example this was the name of the school that the main antagonist experienced occurrences which effected him to become what he is now.

My group was happy with this idea of mine and we all decided to progress with it and have it as our official group name. We also thought about a group for our horror movie and reasons for this. We thought about something to do with the word 'bodies' indicating death

I will be re-entering my g321 media coursework for re examination. By doing this I will be adding to previous existing work in a different colour pink to highlight this.

This is my answer to the seventh question for the evaluation. I have answered this by recording my voice, over an anamatic storyboard that I have created using various IT programs, such as media player and sound recorders etc. As you can see I combined the two to create a video.
I have recently been working on improving each of my previous questions that I have completed, my teacher has informed me on how I can make worthwhile improvements, which I have then gone and completed, this has helped me a lot as I know what I am doing wrong so I can compelte it in my last question.

Wednesday 10 March 2010

I have recently been working on my final two questions for my evaluation, althought time issues are against me I feel that I have worked well under time constraits in the past, such as our final edit due to certain straint. However I am still working on my two questions at the moment.

Final film
This is our final film that we have created. We feel that we have made some worhtwhile changes thanks to our first draft. We had soem trouble using the aditing programme 'Adobe Elements' so we discovered another programme on a computer outside of school, by using this other programme we have been able to be successful and finish out film on time as well as with good audio sounds, transitions and good credits and titles. We are very happy with the edits we have made and feel that we have made a big development from our first draft.
First Draft
This is my group's first draft, this was the one that we needed to complete within the deadline, although it is missing clips from our final film we wanted to make a first draft so that we could get feedback from people on how we could improve it, so that we could take this into consideration for our final peice. Creating a first draft has helped us later improve our final production because we could look at the transitions and credits and make changes to make our film more professional.

Editing Process 2
We carried on editing our film and started on our new shots of the garage scenes because the old ones did not work. We feel that our new shots of the garage scene are much better as the misen scene used is more realistic and works much better for the type of genre our film is going to be. We have half term now untill, 22nd of Feb so we are going to meet up as a whole group to finish the editing of our film.We know that having to re-film has set us back but we need to pull together in order to finish the editing to produce a good film.

Progression 5
Me, James and India re-filmed the garage scene as our first shoot was not very good, we learnt from the mistakes we did the first time by not placing cameras where they would be in the shot of the scene and not showing the face of the antagonist as all through the film we dont want to see his face. Aswell as this, we did slightly change the way we filmed to the film schedule as we used different props because we felt they were better than the old ones. We feel a lot better and have now learnt from our mistakes, we are all very pleased with the shots that were taken and feel that we can now edit to create a much better believable film. I had to film most of the shots myself because we used a few of our members as we had difficulties with using our original characters due to loss of time, because of this i had to do some by myself but i felt that we all came together as a group to film some good scenes.
Progression 4 - 9th Feb
Our group has decided to refilm the garage scene because in each of our shots we have the camera crew in view so ideally we cannot use the shots because it does not look professional. We agreed to refilm this garage scenes within the next few days to allow our film to be much better when we carry on editing our piece and maybe change a couple of shots to help make the misen sccene much better.

Editing Process- Thursday 28th Jan
Our group started on editing the News Report scene for our film. This is so that we can go on to film another scene that we need, to make sure we get it all done on time. Filming the scene like this makes the shot more effective and interesting as it shows that the processes of the killings are happening at the time in question. We decided in the end to not flick between different shots instead use a mid shot throughout because thats what a standard news report is like. After putting the last scene of the garage, we realised that we had not got any good footage, as we made a mistake of having people in our shot. We felt that this was a big learning curve, as we then knew this had set us back and had to consider filming this scene all over again.

Progession 3, 24th Jan
Me, Tom, India and James managed to film all of our garage scenes taking shots from three different angles to allow us to combine together during the editing process to make the film more professional. Instead of putting an actual person in the bin bags during the filming of the killer taking the body out of his van, we used a couple of bin bags and a duvet to allow the bag to be padded out so it looks like there is a real body inside.
Film Diary for the 21st January 2010

Progression 2
India, Tom and James managed to film the pub scene showing the killer drawing in his next victim to be killed. We filmed at three different angles again to help us edit the scene better on the editing programme by using transitions.. Also, one of the very first scenes in the film where a dead body is found in a pile of dead leaves with blood that India made over the victims face.Another scene that was shot was the first dead body which had been killed, the group discussed that the fake blood needed to be used well by covering his face so it is believable. He is also laying in a deserted feild which adds to the dangerous feel.

Progression 1

We have been filming the news report scene and have uploaded it to the computer ready for editing. In this scene we filmed three angles of the shot, which are all mid angle shots, this is so that we can begin to edit the filming, and make transitions between the camera angles to show that we have developed our angles. Also using the same angle throughout a scene can make it seems rather boring, and can show that not much effort was put into the filming ideas.

This is a photo of the person Keegan who we have used as our killer in our moveie 'Lesson Learnt' we have decided to use this Keegan as our main character because we feel that his audition was the best, most confident one. Similarly we have chosen Keegan also because of his dark hair and his potential features as the killer in our film. We wanted to choose someone who can pull off looking intimidating but not too fierce. This is due to the rest of our storyline within the film. Keegan also fits the character profile the most. He represents dark hair and darkfeatures.

This is Emmaline, who plays the character 'Fuschia' who is one of the killers two victims. This character is dressed in innocent colours such as whites, and pastels in contrast to her blood red hair which connotes death and gore.

This is Alex, who plays the killers first vicitim, we chose alex to play the dead body because he looks innocent. We are going to cover the dead bodies face with blood to show that he is dead, it will be one shot that is continuously going over his dead still face to denote his death with silence.

This is the female character that we have chosen to use for one of the news reporters. We have chosen a woman and a man for this role because we feel that it follows the typical conventions of a news report that the audience would normally expect to see, also this makes the even seem more realistic, including the fact that they are infront of the high school which makes it seem more tragic. We chose this character with blonde hair dressed in smart chlothes to connote innocence within the character who is doing her job. She will be dressed in a white shirt and smart suit chlothes, this is to mirror her smart job and the seriousness within the situation.

This is the male reporter who will be acting with the females blonde character also dressed in a smart suit and tie. This is to also reflect the innocence within the scenario that the audience is given. We wanted the news reporters to look reletively smart and well spoken, because this will make it seem more realistic and relevent to the storyline. By having a male and female who are both smart and well spoken it will reflect the story. Having a news report at the end of the trailer also leaves a cliff hanger and allows the audience to know what is going on, and follow the storyline without getting confused. We also used these two characters mainly because of their age, they are resonably older than the rest of the cast we have used, because this connotes the seriousness within the scene again and is more realistic.

Similar Media Works
These are just a few of the slides that I have created to distribute into this group assignment. By creating a similar media works presentation I was able to develop my imagination and ideas for my groups film. For this peice of work I was able to look into many other different horror films from 'Rosemary's baby' to ' The hills have eyes'. Looking into these other horror movies inspired us to make our own horror movie. We mainly drew insight from the storyline and how the scene directions weer used within each scene. The props that were used was a great way to gain inspirtation. My group also found listening to the extra- diagetic sounds from the horror movies very interesting and inspirational. I think that the sounds in films can make a big difference, as it allowed the audience to know when a scary peice of film is coming up, therefore I wanted to make sure our film had good relevent music with a low tone of beat behind it in it.

Props, Costumes and Equipment lists

This is what i have uploaded to the group blog for our props, cotumes and equipment list. I have thought of every possible thing that our group will be using whilst filming and wrote them down in this list order:

Props:
• Garage tools such as spanners, a hammer, wrench, Blow torch which the killer will use inside his garage
• Fake blood using experimented ingredients
• Bin bags for the dead bodies
• Yearbook which will show the victims
• Red marker pen for the crossing out of dead pupils
• White van which the killer will use
• Welding mask
• Microphones for the news reporters
• Telivision which will be used at the end for the killer's over the shoulder shot

Costumes

• Overalls for the killer
• White T-shirt and jeans for Fuchsia
• First dead body will be dressed in casual jeans and any coloured t-shirt
• The news reporters will be dressed in smart suits, for the male this will consist of blazer and tie, and for the woman skirt and blouse

Equipment

• Three cameras
• Three tripods
• One dolly
• Three memory cards
Audition Information
Whilst auditioning i helped the team find people that i knew were interested in taking part in the filming process, i also helped with the poster design and putting them around school where i thought would be the best place.

Kingsford production team held auditions for our short film ‘Lesson Learnt’ on Friday they 11th of December at 11:00am. To advertise and alert our auditions we put up posters with all the details on around the school in mthe main areas such as canteen hall, dram doors etc. Our auditions had a good turn out and we managed to cast our entire film in one audition process. This is who we have cast to be in our film:

Douglas – Keegan Featherstone
Fuchsia – Emmaline Gordon
Dead Body #1- Alex Cockburn
News Reporter #1- Glynn Harries
News Reporter #2- Gemma Peacock

As a team we are really pleased with who we have cast, we feel that we have all the characters we need and who we have cast meets our character description well. Within the opening of the film that we are filming there is not much speech as we feel it adds to the suspense and horror of the piece. Therefore when casting our film we had the actors improvise what they thought there character would say. We also asked certain characters to pretend to be dead etc. in order to get into there role

Similar Media Works Presentation

For the Similar Media Works presentation our group designed to assign each person with certain slides to even out the work load,i started of the powerpoint with the first two or three slides and helped my group with otehr slides as well. I think i put effort into this peice through my writing to develop our groups ideas. The uploaded slides are the ones that i was invovled in or did completely by myself. I think that are group worked especially well together on this presentation, because we set out a plan and stuck to it, which we have found is a good way of sorting out who is doing what, and by the gant chart which helped us an awful lot too.

Fake Blood

Today me and India met together to film the making of our fake blood. We used our own camera's so that we could do it at any time outside of school. We filmed each ingrediants so that we could show in detail the making of our blood and step by step. We did not speak because we want to exaplin through writing in more detail so that it can be easier to explain. The fake blood came out really well which we was really pleased with so that we now feel more confident in making it for the making of the final film. This is what our fake blood consisted of:

Ingredients

Syrup
Peanut Butter
Water
Flour
Red Food Colouring
Chocolate Spread
Chocolate Powder

We tested several sets of ingredients in order to find which one produced the best blood alternative, and we came to the conclusion that the ingredients listed above worked the best. We have filmed the making of our fake blood to show exactly what we did and how we did it. We feel that the fake blood looks really good, and is around the same consistency of blood so this makes it look more real. We have decided to use fake blood as a prop in our short film as it makes it scarier and makes it more believable to the audience. Therefore we think that the fake blood we are using in our film, is one of the most important props as it adds depth and a lot of impact to the piece

Locations

Location

Locations

For this peice of work India, James and Tom all has input on this, whilst photographs were added. I contributed taking the photo's and giving my group idea's about the location and what would suit our film the best and make it seem more realistic and professional. I also said that we needed to make sure we had consent, for example using the pub which we will need concent from the land lord.

Our group came up with ideas on where we would like to film our horror movie to make it as effective as possible. We decided that we will film in multiple locations, so that we make the audience think about where these locations are and if the killings involved are linked. We decided to have our antagonist’s workplace as a car bodyworks garage which is located in Great Leighs. We have chosen this because it can be a quiet place where no-one knows the goings on inside. There is a large supply of murder weapons and tools of his trade. We could film this at any time during the day, as it will not matter whether our light source is natural or not. However filming at night will personify our antagonist’s personality, as he is a dark character who is aiming to kill. We also think that the garage is a good location to choose because it is a dark and scary place which is synonymous with the horror genre.

We will also film outside a pub because our antagonist meets one of his victims and we film them both leaving the pub and getting into his van. The pub we will be filming at will be located in Broomfield .This shows the innocence of the victim as she doesn’t know what is going to happen to her. This also makes our antagonist more vulnerable because he is seen in public, but at this time in the film no-one suspects him to be the killer. We will film outside the pub at dusk, so we have some natural light, but also it shows the end of a meeting in any normal circumstances, which is making our short film all the more realistic. This location is an important part of the film because it shows our antagonist in public and also makes the audience question what is going to happen to the woman that he leaves the pub with.

We will be filming our news report outside the front of Chelmer valley high school. This will be because in our film all the murders are linked, they are only linked because the people that have died all where in the leaving class of 1995. This shows that all the victims come from here as the background of the school symbolises it. We will be filming this during the day as will we try to make the report as realistic as possible. So we will probably film the news report during one of our media lessons. The news report will be the ending of our opening of the film; we have chosen to do this because it leaves the audience with a sense of suspense about what is going to happen next, if we were to make the entire film.

We will also be filming in a woodland area which will be in St. Andrews park which is located in Newland Spring. We have decided to choose this location as a scene for or first murder. The Kingsford production team has decided that the woods is a good place for the victims body to be because it is dark, scary and it gives the audience a sense of fear, because the image of the corpse will be hard hitting. We will film the killer’s feet walking away from the victim through dead leaves, which connotes more death and destruction, showing that the antagonist is killing everything in its path. This will also be filmed at dusk to show the transfer from light to dark, just like the killers personality.

Props and Costumes

For this peice of work i worked individually whilst asking the members of my groups which other things we needed to include in our film, this was good because our group then thought about every single thing we needed which we may forget or thought wasn't so important.

Props:

• Garage tools such as spanners, a hammer, wrench, Blow torch which the killer will use inside his garage
• Fake blood using experimented ingredients
• Bin bags for the dead bodies
• Yearbook which will show the victims
• Red marker pen for the crossing out of dead pupils
• White van which the killer will use
• Welding mask
• Microphones for the news reporters
• Telivision which will be used at the end for the killer's over the shoulder shot

Props and Costumes
Costumes:
• Overalls for the killer
• White T-shirt and jeans for Fuchsia
• First dead body will be dressed in casual jeans and any coloured t-shirt
• The news reporters will be dressed in smart suits, for the male this will consist of blazer and tie, and for the woman skirt and blouse
We wanted the killers clothes to represent the storyline, so we have used typical overall chlothing to connote his characteristics.

Target audience profile

Target audience profile

For this peice of work our group decided our target audience and what we would base this around, we wanted to use the 'polititcal aimes for british people' as well as our own interpretation for our audience. Our age group which we decided together is 15-25 because we want the modern era to know about our film and to have a good outlook on it to tell their 'freinds'. Although we have this age range, we also have a male view too. This is because our film includes a male killer who is strong and masculine, which would influence the audience due to our protagonists and antagonist. When James wrote this peice i Gave him ideas and things to write which would help towards finding our target audience, using typical conventions from other horror movies.

The film that we are making is a horror and will be politically aimed at British people. Our film will be able to be seen at all A, B, C1, C2, D and E class groups but our film is mainly aimed at B, C1, C2 and D class groups. These groups intended for are the middle classed, unemployed group of people around which is around teen-young adult; 15-25. The reason for this is because of the modern era being based around gore and violence which is the most popular out of the sub genres. Our film is going to be aimed at mainly males as both our protagonist and antagonists are going to be males. Reason for this is because for the film we are making using a male is more likely to be realistic in wanting revenge for the bullying in the past.

For the age certificate being 15, this allows the film to be aimed at teens-young adults as a 15 certificated film can contain the same depth of an 18 film but in slightly lesser detail; minimizing the swearing and the amount of violence in the film but still having enough for the realism of horror to be in effect. Also, certificating the film a 15 allows the audience of the film to be aimed at a wider range of people. More and more people are starting to play electronic games like the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and standard computers and are ranged around the class group we decided to set for our film and involved in the gaming are horror, action, gore, violence etc… which are all included in our film so is ideal to set our film around these as they are the most popular at the moment. Also, from a questionnaire we made, the majority said that they would prefer the rating of the horror film to be 15.

Making our film a 15 is ideal because included in our film will be moments of swearing but not very often. Using swearing in various parts of the film allows getting across to the audience the full impact of the scenario set for character. For example, if a character is in a dark room and didn’t know how he got there he/she would not say where am I, how I got here, they would be emphasizing there emotions as much as possible because they are scared and frightened as they do not know what is going to happen next. So using swearing in parts of the film will allow the characters to illustrate there emotions to the audience and add the tension to the audience as if they are in that position. A film that demonstrates this is Saw 1, as in the opening couple of minutes of the film the two protagonists are in a pitch black room and one of the characters says swear words to emphasize his emotions and being in a dark room the audience cannot see his expressions so him using the swear words tells the audience how he is feeling. Also, some parts of the film when the killings are present, they either have already happened like the opening of the film or are happening off camera so this takes away some of the gore and violence from the film but using this technique can also make the audience just as scared because the actions the antagonist is performing on the character could mean that it is too disgusting to show on camera. A film that demonstrates this is Halloween when the antagonist kills one of his victims with a scythe but instead of seeing him kill the victim all you see is blood splatter across the barn. However, in the other parts of the murders, they will be showed on the camera to help set the certificated rating and add the suspense and tension to the audience so they will get scared.

In our questionnaire we made, we first asked the question if they liked horror films. Most of the people we asked said they liked horror films but two people (both female) said they didn’t and one was 50/50 (male) as he likes some types of horrors and doesn’t like others. We then asked what it they didn’t like about them. One of them said that they didn’t like gore in films and the other said that the writers were twisted and what they come up with, some things have gone too far.

Types of media works our audience consumes are soaps like Hollyoaks which are based on real events that have happened or can happen so this allows it to compare itself to the audience. Having said this so does our film with either films they enjoy watching like Saw or Halloween or games that they play on there console as they can relate the type of genre or the components involved in the media to what is going to be in our film, gore violence, horror.
From the questionnaire, One of the questions we asked was what other genres do they enjoy watching. We asked five females and five males and all five females said they enjoyed watching comedy films and two out of the five said they enjoyed watching Rom-Coms. Furthermore, all five of the males said they enjoyed watching comedy also and three out of the five said they enjoyed watching action films as well. From the information gathered, we found out that comedy was the favourite other genre our audience likes watching; we can include a bit of comedy in our film, but as it’s a horror- gore and violence, we don’t really want to include comedy in our film. Although from the other two popular genres that were said; action and Rom-Com we could add a bit of both in as throughout the film, action at some point will be a slight role in our film as its admissible and maybe we could include Rom-Com as the Protagonist could save an opposite sex character.

From the questionnaire, one of the questions we asked was what there favourite horror film was. The feedback was very good for our target audience profile as every single answer that was given by both boys and girls were completely different. Although, the films that they said were there favourite links in with each other as the majority of the films are similar to what we are going to make so this helps us a lot as it tells us that we are on the same lines of our audience and is making the appropriate film.
Also, we asked what they prefer in a horror film. The five female audience members were about 50/50 with the answers we got from them. Two out of five said that they would prefer the film to be based on a psychological thriller, Two out of five said they would prefer the film to be based on scary and the other said they would prefer the film to be based on comedy. Whereas, two out of the five males said they would prefer the film to be based on gore, one said comedy, another said scary and another said other. From these results overall were a success as our film will contain gore and will be scary.
Moreover, we asked what they like about horror films. On the female side of the questionnaire, Three out of five said they like paranormal activities in films and the rest said they like spoofs in horror films. On the male side of the questionnaire, two out of the five said they liked monsters (i.e. zombies), one said they liked spoofs, another said they liked paranormal activities and the other said they liked mass murders. Although we are not making a paranormal activity film, spoof film or monster film which was what the majority of the audience likes I believe that this was not so important in our research as mass murder was selected; being one out of the ten, means that that sort of activity in a film is still liked and I believe will still be popular.
In a horror film our target audience said what they would expect to see in one. Three out of the five males said that they would expect to see blood in a horror film and the other two said they would expect to see death in a horror film. Two of the females said that they would expect killing/death in a horror film, another said an innocent victim, another said twists in the story line to make the audience think and the other said scariness; something to make the audience react to what is happening. From this information gathered, the majority thought killing, death, blood was the most expected to be in a horror film and that is what we are containing in ours so I believe we made the right decision.

To advertise our film, we believe that we would use the TV as nowadays most people have at least one TV in there home so a lot of people would be able to see it. As well as TV, we would use websites like facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc…. as most people these days use social networking sites so our film will be able to be advertised globally interesting more people.

To advertise my film trailer in the cinema, I would screen it in films that are similar to our film and that are the same genre; being horror like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween. Screening our film’s trailer in films similar to ours allows the audience that is interested in that type of film to want to see our film as well as its like the film they are about to watch.

Overall, our film is aimed at young teens-adults with the certificate of 15. This is because we believe the younger generation prefer to watch horror films than the older so basing it at 15 allows us to include enough depth in a typical horror film for the audience to enjoy a good scare including gore and violence and allows us to get as much audience as we can. A film that is similar to this is ‘The Ring’ as the certificate for this film is a 15 but it is scary at various points in the film as it makes the audience jump and react with it, also contains violence and gore as blood is presented and a couple of killings.
